Kenya Interest Rates Today (CBR, T-Bill, Lending and Savings Rates)

Important

Executive Summary:

  • Kenya interest rates today: the Central Bank Rate is 8.75%, the 91-day Treasury bill 8.56%, and inflation 6.68%.
  • Commercial banks lend at about 14.69% but pay savers only 3.31% (deposit rate 6.88%).
  • The rates below come straight from the Central Bank of Kenya and move with monetary policy. If your savings earn less than inflation, they are losing value, which is the whole case for a money market fund.

Kenya interest rates today dashboard

There is no single rate of interest in Kenya. The Central Bank sets one, banks charge another to lend and pay a third to savers, Treasury bills pay something else again, and inflation quietly eats into all of them. This page puts the headline rates in one dashboard, taken straight from the Central Bank of Kenya, so you can see where your money stands today.

What these rates mean for you

  • Central Bank Rate (8.75%). The policy rate. It is the floor under bank lending and a leading indicator for where MMF yields are heading.
  • 91-day Treasury bill (8.56%). The closest thing to a risk-free return in Kenya, and a big part of what money market funds hold. When T-bill rates fall, MMF yields follow.
  • Lending rate (14.69%) vs savings rate (3.31%). What banks charge borrowers versus what they pay savers.
  • Inflation (6.68%). The hurdle every rate above must clear to grow your money in real terms.

The lending-versus-savings gap

Banks in Kenya charge about 14.69% to lend but pay roughly 3.31% on a savings account, a spread of about 11.38 percentage points. That gap is the single best reason to (a) clear expensive debt before you invest, and (b) refuse to leave serious money in a low-paying bank account.

What it means for your savings

A bank savings account paying 3.31% with inflation at 6.68% gives a real return of about -3.37% (i.e. your money loses purchasing power). A money market fund, paying well above inflation, is the simple fix. See the current MMF rates and how to read a rate net of tax.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the current interest rates in Kenya? As published by the Central Bank of Kenya, the Central Bank Rate is 8.75%, the 91-day Treasury bill 8.56%, inflation 6.68%, the average bank lending rate 14.69% and the average savings rate 3.31%.

What is the Treasury bill rate in Kenya today? The 91-day Treasury bill rate is 8.56%. The 182-day and 364-day bills usually pay a little more; the CBK publishes each weekly auction’s results. T-bills are the risk-free benchmark money market funds are measured against.

Why do banks pay so little on savings? Kenyan banks pay an average savings rate of 3.31% while charging about 14.69% to lend, because they keep the spread. With inflation at 6.68%, a savings account is usually losing real value, which is why many Kenyans use a money market fund instead.

How often do these rates change? The Central Bank Rate changes only at MPC meetings (about every two months); Treasury bill rates move weekly at auction; lending, savings and deposit rates are reported monthly. This page is refreshed from the CBK’s own published figures.
